Sculptural pair of fiberglass lounge chairs in excellent condition.

Designed by Douglas Deeds in the 1970s.

Manufactured by Architectural Fiberglass Co. a division of Architectural Pottery.

The chairs are entirely made of fiberglass which gives them their minimalist sculptural shape.
The seats are upholstered with a natural fabric and can be removed.

Both the fiberglass base and the seats are professionally restored.

The fiberglass is repainted in the original mustard color and the seats are reupholstered with a high quality beige fabric.

These models were imported into Australia by Spectrum Pty Ltd, a firm managed by Michael Hall Best. Michael Hall Best was the son of Marion Hall Best, an interior decorator.

Best ran an influential retail outlet in Queen Street, Woollahra, from 1938 to 1974, importing and commissioning 20th century design classics from Europe, USA, Japan and Finland, and sponsoring the work of Australian artists and designers.

The furniture was introduced in the late 1960s by her son, Michael Hall Best. His firm Spectrum Pty Ltd secured exclusive rights to corporate furniture from Herman Miller and Architectural Fiberglass (USA).

In 1972 Spectrum Pty Ltd were awarded the public contract to supply the Sydney Opera House with moulded fibreglass outdoor and indoor seating. The first of this furniture had been imported by Best from Architectural Fiberglass USA and was being made under licence in Australia under the Spectrum tradename.

This chair forms part of the original range of fibreglass furniture which included planters, benches, stools and tables, manufactured by Architectural Fiberglass, Los Angeles, and which was imported to Australia by Marion Hall Best in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
