The P40 is an extraordinary synthesis of mechanical ingenuity, ergonomics and sculptural elegance. Rather than functioning as a conventional fixed armchair, Borsani conceived it as a dynamic seating system whose articulated components can be independently repositioned to accommodate the body in a remarkable range of configurations. Tecno’s own description emphasizes its ability to open and close through a series of settings, from an upright position to deep recline.

The seat and backrest pivot independently, allowing the sitter to establish different degrees of inclination. The concealed mechanism beneath the seat incorporates a folding leg support, which swings forward to extend the chair into a chaise-like configuration. An additional metal footrest pulls out from within the leg support, creating a fully extended position for relaxation. The headrest can also be extended, while the characteristic steel-and-rubber armrests are flexible and can be moved away from the body.

Particularly distinctive are the P40’s machined brass controls, joints and fittings. The warm metallic details punctuate the otherwise restrained structure, providing a deliberate contrast with the dark painted metal and upholstery.

This example is an original Tecno P40, upholstered in grey Kvadrat Tonus. The understated grey wool provides a contemporary interpretation of Borsani’s design while allowing the original mechanical architecture, black metal structure and brass hardware to remain visually prominent.

The P40 can be understood as a sequence of transformations:
Upright lounge position — compact and relatively vertical for conventional sitting.
Reclining positions — the seat and backrest articulate through multiple angles, allowing the body to move progressively into a more relaxed posture.
Extended leg support — the concealed support beneath the seat folds outward.
Footrest extension — a secondary metal element pulls forward to support the feet.
Headrest adjustment — the upper support can be extended to accommodate the head in deeper reclining positions.
Flexible armrests — the steel-and-rubber arms respond to the sitter’s movement and can be folded away.
Fully reclined configuration — the separate moving elements align to create a chaise-like, almost horizontal position.

Osvaldo Borsani
1911–1985 Italian Architect & Designer
Osvaldo Borsani was a pioneering Italian architect and designer whose work brought together architecture, craftsmanship and technological innovation. Born near Milan in 1911, he studied at the Accademia di Brera and the Politecnico di Milano before establishing himself through experimental furniture and interiors.
In 1953, Borsani and his twin brother Fulgenzio founded Tecno, developing furniture that combined refined craftsmanship with advanced mechanical engineering. His designs, including the P40 lounge chair and D70 sofa, became landmarks of Italian post-war design.
Borsani’s work is distinguished by its sculptural elegance, precision and intelligent functionality, with the P40 representing perhaps the clearest expression of his belief that technology and comfort could become part of the aesthetic itself.
