Italy 1970s

Impressive three-legged dining chairs in very good condition.

Product description

Impressive three-legged dining chairs in very good condition.

Designed in the period: circa 1978–1985
Origin: Italy
Materials: saddle leather and black-chromed steel
Construction: three-legged frame with integrated leather seat and back

A striking set of vintage Italian dining chairs, dating from around the late 1970s, featuring a distinctive three-legged architectural construction.

The chairs combine a sculptural black leather saddle leather shell with a sophisticated black-chromed steel frame.

The leather forms a continuous seat and high backrest, wrapping around the upper frame and finished with carefully stitched and folded edges.

The unusual three-legged construction — with two front legs and a single central rear leg rising behind the backrest — gives the chairs a remarkably light yet highly architectural appearance.

Their restrained geometric lines and combination of leather and black chrome place them firmly within the Italian postmodern design tradition of the period.

The design is particularly interesting for its relationship to the experimental three-legged leather furniture developed in Italy in the late 1970s, including the influential work of Angelo Mangiarotti. However, the exact manufacturer and designer of this particular metal-frame version remain unidentified.

A rare and highly distinctive set, ideal for collectors of Italian vintage design, postmodern furniture and architectural seating.
