Product description
A rare first-edition example of the Mattino d’Inverno (Winter Morning) wall lamp in excellent condition.
Designed by Angelo Brotto for Esperia, Italy.
Dated and signed by Angelo Brotto, ‘Brotto 1973’
This exceptional lighting piece represents the experimental spirit of Italian design in the 1970s.
Part of the iconic Quasars series, the design blurs the boundaries between lighting, sculpture, and art.
Its geometric composition and irregular glass elements create a striking interplay of texture, reflection, and light, giving the piece an almost otherworldly presence.
The combination of refined metalwork and sculptural Murano glass reflects Brotto’s distinctive approach to decorative lighting, in which each work becomes an expressive artistic object in its own right.
Conceived as both a functional light source and a statement piece, Mattino d’Inverno brings a dramatic architectural presence to an interior. Equally compelling in a contemporary setting or a carefully curated collection of Italian mid-century design, it stands as a testament to Angelo Brotto’s inventive vision and his celebrated collaboration with Esperia.
This example retains its original chromed wall mount and socket, preserving important elements of its original construction.
A highly collectible example of Italian design, combining artistic expression, exceptional visual impact, and historical significance.

History and significance of the Quasars series:
Developed from the late 1960s, the Quasars collection emerged from Brotto’s exploration of lighting as both a functional object and an independent work of art. Inspired by the era’s fascination with space and the universe,
these luminous sculptures combine geometric metal structures with irregular glass elements to create striking, almost extraterrestrial compositions.
The collection was created through Esperia’s collaboration with specialist Murano glassmakers, including Venini and Moretti. The glass refracts and filters the light, producing subtle variations in texture, colour and reflection. The result is a sculptural form that transcends conventional decorative lighting.
The Mattino d’Inverno lamp is officially identified by Esperia as the first model in the Quasars collection. Other notable works include Oceano and Fantasia Notturna.
Angelo Brotto (1914–2002) was an Italian artist and designer renowned for his sculptural lighting and experimental use of materials. Born in Venice, he trained as a painter before establishing a long-standing collaboration with Italian lighting manufacturer Esperia in 1958. Blending art, architecture, and innovative craftsmanship, Brotto created distinctive lighting sculptures incorporating Murano glass, chromed metal, and brass.
